Education acts as a backbone in the development of an Individual. It shapes a person’s behavior, thought process, and skills. Education is inevitable for the development of an individual as well as for the entire country. Country’s growth and economy depend on the skilled individuals and their minds, and all of it is gained from education. When we look at the background Indian education exhibits, it has various achievements to show. But from the past few decades, the Indian education system is falling behind when compared to other countries and this affects us in many ways in and out.
Indian Government is working to improve the literacy rate and make education a necessary right for every Indian citizen still there are so many challenges in the education sector that must be looked up to. There is a considerable population that lacks the facility of education, and many people who complete their studies with good grades move abroad to get a good job for better opportunities
Major problems that require immediate changes are-
- Memorized Learning-
The concept of learning things or we say memorizing things instead of understanding their importance and applications is being continued for decades and needs a sudden appraisal. International Baccalaureate(IB) schools are trying to change the trend, but the majority of the students cannot afford to go to these schools. And therefore the government has to come forward and remove this practice from all levels of education and move to a way of learning and is useful in the years to come.
The idea of visionary education must be given the limelight so that the student will be able to retain things for a long time and in better ways.
- Grading System-
Grades play a major role in deciding the eligibility and intelligence of a student. A student who scores 90% or above is considered to be extraordinary and talented while a student who scores less is considered to have no good future. This needs to be changed as grades cannot decide how brilliant a student is and because of this prevailing evaluation policy students find studying a burden and often end up scoring less. Instead of taking hour-long exams, the education must focus on the communication ability, practical knowledge, and extra activities a student can perform.
- Decreased Enthusiasm towards learning-
A huge part of education that is given to students is theoretical, rather than guiding them to deal with problems and have a practical approach towards problems. Practical learning's must be given more importance which will also bring an emerging interest in the minds of students to go deeper in the matters. Our aim should not be just completing the syllabus but to deliver it interestingly, students are forced to study the same syllabus and have to appear in theoretical exams for that which snatches the productivity.
- Every subject must be given equal status-
We reside in the education structure where science is considered as the topmost subject and every other subject comes after. Subjects are divided in a hierarchical pattern which is in the system. Every subject has its importance and domains and therefore categorizing them as most valuable or least important does not make any sense. Students shall not be motivated to choose a subject according to what ranking it holds, rather they must be advised to opt for a stream or subject as per their interest and passion for it
- Absence of Uniqueness-
What is the main aim of education? To teach a person to stand on his own feet to thrive for success. Every child doesn’t want to be a mathematician or a doctor, everyone has interests and wants to pursue them. Our education system focuses on giving the same subject knowledge for a very long period even if a student doesn’t opt for that subject, there’s no point to study it for 10–12 long years. Acute knowledge of every subject is necessary but there is not a requirement for depth knowledge. We hope that things will change up to a great extent with the new education policy coming into existence, as it focuses on bringing different interests into existence from an early age.
- Bringing Technology in Education-
Indian education system still works on the old techniques to teach students. There is an urgent need to introduce E-learning methodologies and concepts, although they have been introduced to a minimal level, upbringing them is very important. Teachers must be provided with proper training and guidance and should be introduced to new technologies so that they can deliver the best to the students. Teachers are considered to be the second parents and hence they must be given training in such a way that can make students feel at home.
- Deliver the main purpose of Education-
Students have to be taught the main purpose of education. For them, education is about scoring good grades, rote learning, and appearing in exams. But education is not just about passing with good grades and appearing in exams. It is also about generosity. With education, students must be taught about moral values and skills. An equal amount of importance should be given to other subjects apart from maths and science. Students shall also be given adequate knowledge of financial education which will help them to take financial decisions in the future.
If these points are given importance and the appropriate measure will be taken up, we can have one of the best Education systems in the world. There is no doubt in accepting the fact that the literacy rate is continually increasing because of the government policies and various fee management programs. There are also various hopes from the introduction of a new education policy, which will bring a huge change in the overall education structure. Government has to start investing highly in the new techniques in the field of education and bring E-learning into existence.
